California LOVE

California may be not be the fashion capital of the U.S., but it's definitely a close second! The list above, compiled by VOGUE, highlights some of the best designers living and working on the west side (and, the best side). Check out the locals favorite artisans, restaurants and places to shop here.

Cory Arcangel on being a space cadet

Cory Arcangel (pictured directly above) is not your typical contemporary artist. His work, which draws mainly from gaming and other forms of technological consumption, is considered "new media" and is somewhat uncharted territory for an industry used to dealing in tangible wares. His best known pieces include Internet interventions and modified video games (see Shoot Andys Only above). In an age where the Internet has become a substitute for human interaction, Cory's work resonates, pin-pointing irony and finding humor in the never-ending and constantly changing "code" that dominates our lives. Read his interview (on being a space cadet) with fellow artist Mary Heilmann here and check out his online projects here, here and here. If you happen to be in NYC (lucky you!), go see his current exhibit, Pro Tools, at the Whitney Museum of American Art running until September 11, 2011.

Santorini, anyone?

I've always been a huge fan of Mara Hoffman and her genius prints, and the Spring 2011 Swim collection might be her best yet. I am literally going to LIVE in the matching turquoise crop top and harem pants next summer when the line comes out! In the meantime, take a tip courtesy of the girls at honestly wtf and do like Mara's models with a pretty double hair braid this summer. Instructions here

Balenciaga's new do

The famed fashion house has always had an eye for futuristic concepts both in their boutique design and on the runway. As of this past week, they've brought this mentality to a brand new website to match. The site is easy on the eyes with minimal verbiage, video footage (for those of us without backstage passes), online shopping, and even has a Heritage section with unarchived images dating back to the 1930s. Thank you, Nicolas Ghesquiere!

By the beach

I happen to live on the west side of LA, quite close to the beach in fact. In honor of this weekend's CARMAGEDDON (a.k.a no crowds on my side of town for the first time ever), I will be taking myself and my better half to the beach!

Hanging Homes

I love these little hanging homes. More stable than a hammock and closer to the ground than a tree house, they're the perfect place to enjoy a summer cocktail, or two, or three...

Buttoned Down for Summer

Who doesn't a love a button down? I mean seriously. Shirts like these make it easy to wake up, get to the office in 30 minutes flat, and transition easily to after-work drinks (or the Fall fashion shows if you happen to be heiress Bianca Brandolini d’Adda, French Vogue’s editor-in-chief Emmanuelle Alt, or model Caroline De Maigre).

Givenchy Fall 2011 RUNWAY

If angels were real, I'm pretty sure these would be their uniforms.
