Public ART

I'm in love with the kind of art that everyone has a chance to experience...especially the kind that makes you stop and stare (and sometimes smile!). Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman's 40 foot high bunny commission for Orebro, Sweden's Open Art Biennial is a welcome chance at all three. When are you coming stateside, Florentijn?

Cory Arcangel on being a space cadet

Cory Arcangel (pictured directly above) is not your typical contemporary artist. His work, which draws mainly from gaming and other forms of technological consumption, is considered "new media" and is somewhat uncharted territory for an industry used to dealing in tangible wares. His best known pieces include Internet interventions and modified video games (see Shoot Andys Only above). In an age where the Internet has become a substitute for human interaction, Cory's work resonates, pin-pointing irony and finding humor in the never-ending and constantly changing "code" that dominates our lives. Read his interview (on being a space cadet) with fellow artist Mary Heilmann here and check out his online projects here, here and here. If you happen to be in NYC (lucky you!), go see his current exhibit, Pro Tools, at the Whitney Museum of American Art running until September 11, 2011.
